Biodiversity on a biodynamic farm at Fattoria La Vialla 2024, BioConsult SH
Results report, focusing on avifauna
This officially confirms the fact that organic and biodynamic farming attract and sustain animals... both those with wings and those without! In 2024, the Fattoria brought in birdwatchers and biologists from the BioConsult SH research company. After months of monitoring, mapping and observing, they wrote a report confirming that biodiversity enhances and creates a virtuous cycle of life and prosperity thanks to organic and biodynamic farming. The wide range of species found, including some rare ones, amazed and touched the Viallini, and represents the most prestigious organic certification they could have wished for.
Results of the Survey
With 1,253 breeding pairs in the mapped areas and 72 different breeding bird species, the Fattoria is characterised by a very high level of diversity in its bird fauna. An evaluation of the potential analysis indicates that 2,160 breeding pairs can be assumed for the entire area covered by the Fattoria.
The range of species mapped is dominated by the tit family (14.3%, 309 breeding pairs), followed by the warbler family (14%, 303 breeding pairs). The finch family accounts for 9% with 195 breeding pairs, the thrush family 6.9% with 149 breeding pairs, and the sparrow family 5.1% with 110 breeding pairs (see Fig. 3-1 and Table 3.1). All the other families account for less than 5%.
The overall biodynamic management of the Fattoria has a significant impact on the biodiversity not only of bird life, but also of wild bees, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, bats and other mammals. The entire area of the estate has a species-rich and ecologically stable system that constitutes a valuable contribution to the preservation of the region’s biodiversity.
