A Tuscan Pinot Nero, from grapes grown in the stony and very mineral Viallino soil at Casa Rossa. It’s a cru and combines the uniqueness of a terroir, which enhances the intensity of the demanding grape variety, with its innate elegance. Among recent years, 2017 was one of the most difficult in Tuscany: very hot, marked by late frost. In the upper part of the vineyard the few grapes that grew, originating from late recovery of the basal buds, were hard and slightly dried out (sweet); in the lower part they were juicy, acidic and light. They were harvested separately, which resulted in 2 small fermentation tanks being used. The base wines were combined and then spent 48 months in barriques, some new, others already used once or twice. After blending the various barriques, the Pinot Nero aged in the bottle for another 4 months.
Tasting – Colour: an unusually intense garnet red for Pinot grapes. The nose: an extensive bouquet, from the typical aromas – jam and fruit preserved in alcohol, blackberries and plums, ripe raspberries and liquorice – to more unusual ones, blond tobacco, humus and slightly vanillary wood. In the mouth: soft and mellow, numerous yet delicate tannins, enveloping, particularly persistent.
Wine and Food Pairing – An important wine that therefore likes to “meditate” alone... or with dishes worthy of it: pappardelle with meat ragu, beef “tagliata”, pan-cooked rabbit or mature cheese (such as a Pecorino Gran Riserva…).
NB: we recommend that you open the bottle at least an hour in advance, to let the wine breathe, so that its bouquet can open up completely.
