On the island of sunshine, homeland of Grandfather Lo Franco, grows this grape variety that conveys all the charm of the mediterranean in a glass. The 2024 season was extremely hot and dry for La Vialla’s vineyards (situated roughly 10 km from the coast of Trapani), so irrigation became a requirement for the survival of the vines (as it was throughout Sicily). The harvest, between late July and early August, was carried out at night or early in the morning, in order to safeguard the grapes picked. The bunches were pressed whole to preserve the aromas and avoid undesirable proliferation of microbes, while keeping the use of sulphites to a minimum. For the same purpose, when alcoholic fermentation was completed, the noble lees were left in the wine and stirred through constant bâtonnage. This keeps oxidation under control in a natural way and gives the Vermentino sweet polysaccharides and complex aromas.
Tasting – Colour: golden yellow with greenish highlights. The nose: aromas of Mediterranean scrub, calamint, juniper, sage and dandelion, mingle with mineral, fresh and fruity notes such as citrus fruit (lemon, grapefruit), peach and white flowers. In the mouth: saline, like a sea breeze, sapid and mineral, it leaves the palate pleasantly dry.
Wine and Food Pairing – It adores the dishes of its homeland: fried or grilled fish, seafood salad, octopus with potatoes and artichokes, all types of “arancini” rice balls (with ragu and peas, with saffron and pecorino). It’s also perfect with a dish of pasta dressed with wild fennel pesto, or with zucchini, basil pesto and lemon.
